A case that was used for gunpowder during the late Edo period, to fill the matchlock gun, a weapon imported into Japan during early Edo.
The case has urushi lacquer and carved floral imagery with gold paint applied in the grooves.
The lid is attached to the case with a string that has an agate stone at the end.
The string seems to have been replaced at some point.
