Haruyuki Matsumoto was born in TottoriPrefecture in 1983. He attended the Left Ceramic Cultural Design Course at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, and graduated from Ceramics Course in Faculty of Art of Kyoto Seika University in 2008. In 2010, he completed his studies at the Graduate School of art: Matsumoto's Program at Kyoto Sika University.
Haruyuki's works are made of white porcelain and black porcelain, which he produces himself by mixing iron into the white porcelain. These pieces look like a midpoint between porcelain and glass, and some of the pieces are so thin that the fingers holding the piece can almost be seen through the walls. Haruyuki values the way his delicate pieces feel when held in the hands, and especially finds enjoyment in the uncertainty there is when firing such a thin piece in a kiln-in the heat, the thin walls may move or wrap, adding to the character of the piece.
