In 2001, Akira Koie assisted his father with building a kiln, which was a month and half long process. He found himself wanting to create works in this kiln, but it wasn't until 2004 that he was inspired to begin making his own work, during his temporary employment as an excavator of thousand-year old ceramic works in his local city of Tokoname.
Akira Koie's current work is made of clay that the has found and collected himself - an activity he finds great joy in. Rather than looking for materials that fit a piece he has in mind, the shape of his pieces is dictated by the material he comes across. Day-to-day, he faces the clay he finds and creates different designs in a process of trial and error, through which he has gained his unique experience and knowledge of ceramics.
